Alta Badia in autumn, when taste and beauty become one. While the days are still long, the colours of nature unfold in their irresistible glory as summer’s fuss fades away to leave space for silence and a more relaxed pace. So it is against this background, that, between September and October, Alta Badia organises an event of an unequivocal title: Saus dl altonn, the flavours of autumn. Throughout these culinary weeks, the chefs of numerous mountain huts offer - in partnership with local producers and famers - special menus which are dedicated to a particular product of our valley. There is also music and fun as well as local specialities that can be purchased directly from the producers in the participating alpine huts.
Is there a link between “Saus dl altonn” and the Ladin traditions in Alta Badia?
The event “Saus dl altonn” offers a unique culinary experience, emphasising local products and traditions and allowing participants to engage with producers and farmers of our valley.
Other than tasting the traditional Ladin food, what activities can you embark on?
As Saus dl altonn takes place in the mountain huts of Alta Badia, you can embark on wonderful hikes, walks in the woods, bike tours on roads and gravel tracks or just enjoy the colourful autumn scenery of the Dolomites.
What is the tree festival about?
By partnering up with the Forestry Corps, children in primary school actively participate in the planting of trees. A highly symbolic gesture that aims at raising people's awareness of the fundamental importance of nature and its preservation.
Why do larches change colour?
In the needle cells of the “lersc”, as we call larches in Ladin, are carotenoids – orange pigments that are hidden beneath the green chlorophyll. Once the days start getting shorter and the chlorophyll diminishes, orange and then yellow prevail over green.
There is much talk about the bark beetle, though what is it exactly?
It’s a terribly invasive insect that, following storm Vaja in October 2018, destroyed millions of trees and is spreading in our forests as it finds the ideal habitat among felled trees.
What does nature preservation actually mean?
Nature conservation is about safeguarding biodiversity - a variety of living beings populating the Earth by means of a diverse range of genes, species, populations and ecosystems.
