A löm de ciandëra in San Cassiano: night is lit as the lights turn off

The locality of San Cassiano turns off its lights to stage a very special evening: torches and candles alone will illuminate the town centre, so as to fully enjoy the incomparable colours of a star-studded sky while listening to the gentle sound of acoustic music in the background. The evening is an invitation to rediscover your most natural senses and to slow down from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. All of this in an atmosphere designed to relish these simple yet overwhelming emotions, while lending a small but meaningful helping hand to Mother Nature by saving energy as well as reducing visual and noise pollution.

A special evening indeed! A chance to leave the frantic rhythm of the daily life and dedicate your time to rediscovering the natural flow of your own inner sensations and natural vitality. For this magical occasion the centre of San Cassiano will be lit entirely by torch-flame and candles for capturing completely the singular colors of the starry sky.

All these will be accompanied by acoustic music without any amplification.

The aim of this event is to savour and to appreciate these simple but intense emotions and to give a meaningful help to Mother Nature in reducing energy consumption and eliminating unnecessary pollution.

We wish you a truly pleasant evening!

In case of bad weather this special evening will be postponed to the following day.

During the event photos or video footage may be taken for the purpose of documentation and promotion of the event and the region. The footage may be used and published on websites, on social networks and on media in compliance with the data protection regulations.

Getting there

Follow the SS244 Val Badia road towards La Villa and continue on road SS37 to San Cassiano until you reach the centre of the village.

Good to know

What is the most famous constellation in the sky?

Orion, or “the Hunter”, is an important constellation - probably the best known owing to its bright starts and its position close to the celestial equator, making it visible from almost every angle of our planet.

Whom is the church of San Cassiano dedicated to?

The church of San Cassiano, which was already mentioned in a document from the 15th century, is a building of great artistic and historical value, whose reconstruction dates back to 1782. Its interior features a single nave and the high altar is decorated with a painting depicting the Martyrdom of St. Cassian: the martyr who professed the faith in Christianity to the young and to whom the church is dedicated.

Why is it difficult to spot the stars in the city?

Light pollution prevents us from seeing stars of a lower brightness.

What can I expect to discover at the Museum Ladin Ursus Ladinicus?

The museum is divided into three parts: the ground floor houses the bear cave, where the “sleeping bear” can be admired. On the upper floor you can find fossils of great interest, which are typical for the area around San Cassiano. The third area displays a documentation of the cave’s origin, its discovery and the excavations revealing fossils from sixty to fourty thousand years ago.

What can we actually do to reduce light pollution in our everyday lives?

Turn on the lights only when necessary. Opt for energy-saving and energy-efficient light bulbs. Use lighting devices that are suitable for external use. Set timers or use motion sensors. Spread awareness by sensitising people around us.
