Sellaronda Bike Day: no cars, big emotions

It’s the dream of every cyclist to pedal along the Dolomites mountain passes without being hassled by traffic. This makes the Sellaronda Bike Day a wish come true for even twice a year, at the beginning and end of summer. Between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. the mountain passes called Gardena Pass, Sella Pass, Pordoi Pass and Campolongo Pass are all closed to traffic and accessible to thousands of bike lovers who give rise to a unique cycling festival every year! If you are interested in participating in the event, you don’t have to sign up as anyone can start from wherever they like – as long as the tour is performed counterclockwise. May the bliss of cycling be with you!

Do you love cycling and the Dolomites? Then you should not miss the Sellaronda Bike Day, the day when the roads of the famous Sellaronda are closed to motorized traffic and reserved for cyclists, from 8.30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

It is the perfect occasion to ride the Dolomites passes Gardena, Sella, Pordoi and Campolongo without noise and vehicle pollution.

To take part you do not need to register and you can organize the day according to your wishes and abilities, whether as a sporting challenge or an excursion on two wheels. Join in, participate with friends or family and enjoy riding the unique Dolomite roads admiring the landscapes along the route.

The entire tour is 53 km long and has a total difference in altitude of 1600 m, but everyone can drive as long as they want.

It is recommended to cycle anticlockwise!

Good to know

How many kilometres does the Sellaronda cover and what difference in altitude does it have?

This depends from where you start. However, if you only consider the length of the loop, you can look forward to a circuit of 53 kilometres and a 1,600 metre difference in altitude.

How is it that the Sellaronda enjoys such fascination?

The Sella mountain range in the Dolomites is a breathtaking spectacle and cycling along its circuit without the hassle of passing cars and motorbikes a sensational experience. The Sellaronda goes beyond being a popular event for thousands of cyclists from all over the world: it’s a real celebration of environmental sustainability.

Where can I find the world’s most famous cycling monument, the stele commemorating legend Fausto Coppi?

It is located at the summit of the mountain pass called Passo Pordoi. The monument was installed by the municipality of Canazei in 2000 to honour the “Champ of the Champs” and quintuple winner of the Giro d’Italia. Between 1940 and 1954 – except for the years of World War II – the Giro d’Italia crossed the Passo Pordoi for eight times, with the lone leading man being at the head of the race no less than five times.

Why is there a huge wooden bike in Corvara and what does it represent?

Corvara's legendary wooden bike was designed to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Maratona dles Dolomites-Enel. Local artist Hubert Adang created the sculpture which symbolises the widespread love of cycling in Alta Badia.

Why is the Sellaronda Bike Day such a heartfelt event among the people living in the valleys?

For the four valleys surrounding the Sellaronda are all Ladin. This event forms a sort of pedal manifesto for the deeply connected community living in these wonderful mountains.
