Hiking to the Piz Boé peak in the Sella Massif
A demanding hike from Corvara to Piz Boé, the highest peak in the Sella massif.
Piz Boé, in the Sella Group, stands at 3,152 meters and is one of the most accessible peaks over 3,000 meters, making it a popular destination for hikers. However, it's important to note that the ascent from Corvara and the return to Passo Gardena, as outlined in this route, are quite demanding. While climbing equipment isn't required, sure-footedness and mountain experience are essential for tackling this hike. The route primarily traverses rocky terrain, with sections of scree and an equipped trail. As you ascend, the landscape changes, offering breathtaking views of some of the most iconic Dolomite peaks, including the Marmolada, Civetta, Catinaccio, and Sassolungo. At the summit, you'll find the small Capanna Piz Fassa hut, where you can spend the night. However, the true reward is the stunning panorama that only an altitude of over 3,000 meters can provide. The descent involves crossing part of the massif before reaching Gardena Pass.
Roadbook
From Corvara, begin your ascent by heading to the top station of the Vallon chairlift, either on foot or by taking the Boé chairlift followed by the Vallon chairlift. From there, continue past the junction to the Franz Kostner hut until you reach a fork in the path. At this point, take path no. 672 on the right, which leads into a wide gully to the right of the scree and descends below the rock faces. The route then climbs up an equipped trail between the rocks, leading to a large pebbly hollow. After crossing the hollow, continue along the left side of the gully, eventually leaving the gorge on a narrow ledge. The path then heads southwest, starting flat but soon ascending steeply to reach the Cresta Strënta via a scree slope. Follow the ridge to reach the summit of Piz Boé (2h 30min), where you can take in the breathtaking panoramic views.
For the return journey, follow path no. 638 northwest towards the Rifugio Boé hut, crossing a steep scree gully and rocky scree, which is often covered in ice and snow. Upon reaching the hut, take path no. 666, which traverses the entire Mesules plateau, then descends through a gully with rock steps to the Rifugio Pisciadú hut (2,580 m) (4h 10min). Continue down the Val Setus on path no. 666, first along a section equipped with steel cables, and then on a serpentine path over a scree slope. At the fork, take path no. 666 to the left, descending to Gardena Pass. From there, you can return to Corvara either on foot (about 2 hours) or by bus.
