How to get there

Hike to the historic Valparola Alpine pasture, once a site of iron smelting – now a peaceful place with a rich past.

This hike will take you from San Cassiano to the Malga Valparola alp - closed during summer 2025, a historic site, where the mineral extracted in Livinallongo was transported, melted and transformed into iron. The ruins of the melting furnaces are now abandoned and in pieces. Today, only the German hut’s name “Eisenöfenalm“ (Hut of the Iron Furnaces), serves as a reminder of the economic prosperity, now long gone but once enjoyed by this extraordinarily picturesque place.

From the parking area Sciaré, follow trail no. 24B south-westward direction Malga Valparola alp - closed during summer 2024. Getting to a fork, proceed on the left on trail no. 18 slightly uphill, reaching the Malga Valparola alp, right in the middle of lovely woods and meadows (35 min.). Moving on from the alp, climb up keeping to the left, still through the wood and coming to the provincial road from San Cassiano to Passo Valparola. Skirt the road and cross it after 600 m, always following the sign nr. 18 for Passo Valparola, passing a small war cemetery. A little further, coming out once more on the provincial road, you arrive in a few minutes to Passo Valparola and to the bus stop.
