The skiers’ and snowboarders’ guide

FIS guidelines for safe and responsible skiing

The extensive Alta Badia ski area and its surroundings seem to have been made for those who want to have fun on skis and snowboards. To ensure that a day on our slopes is pure enjoyment for everyone, it is important to know and respect some fundamental rules. This way, skiers and snowboarders, beginners and experts alike, can share their passion safely and stress-free.

Below, we have summarized the FIS rules for proper behavior on the slopes.

Self-control and personal conduct

Move on the slopes with care, adjusting your speed, trajectory and behavior to your abilities, the snow conditions and slope traffic.

FIS Rules

Speed Control

Adjust your speed to the conditions

Your speed should always be matched to your abilities, the slope conditions, the weather and the number of skiers around you. Managing your pace means preventing accidents and maintaining control in every situation.

FIS Rules

Choosing your route

Those coming from behind have the greater responsibility

The skier or snowboarder approaching from behind must choose a safe trajectory, avoiding putting those in front at risk. Right of way always belongs to those ahead.

FIS Rules

Safe overtaking

Pass only when there is enough space

Skiers and snowboarders may overtake others provided they leave enough space for those being overtaken to make any voluntary or involuntary movements.

FIS Rules

Entering the slope and restarting

Always look uphill and downhill

When entering the slope, resuming your descent after a stop, or moving uphill, you must ensure that you do not create danger for yourself or others. Checking visibility is essential before any movement.

Slope safety and management

Keep the slope organised and clear, avoiding stops in critical areas and always following the signage to prevent accidents.

FIS Rules

Avoid stopping in critical points

Stay clear of narrow spots and low-visibility areas

Stopping in narrow or poorly visible areas puts you and other skiers at risk. If you fall or find yourself in a dangerous spot, move immediately to the edge of the slope to clear the area.

FIS Rules

Walking uphill or downhill

Keep the slope clear

Skiers and snowboarders walking uphill or downhill must always stay at the edges of the slope, remain visible and avoid obstructing those skiing. Walking along the edge reduces the risk of collisions.

FIS Rules

Follow the signs

Signs are there for your safety

Signs, markers and boundaries must always be respected. They indicate hazards, closures, speed limits and recommended routes, ensuring a safe experience on both the slopes and in snowparks.

Responsibility and cooperation

Respect other skiers and snowboarders and actively cooperate in case of accidents, providing assistance and giving the necessary information.

FIS Rules

Respect for others

Safety comes from mutual behavior

Every skier and snowboarder must act in a way that never endangers others. Maintaining a responsible, predictable and attentive attitude allows everyone to enjoy the mountain safely.

FIS Rules

Provide assistance

If an accident occurs, do not turn away

Anyone who witnesses an accident has a duty to help: call for rescue, alert other skiers to the presence of the injured person and provide support until professionals arrive.

FIS Rules

Mandatory identification

Provide your information if you are involved or a witness

In case of an accident, every skier or snowboarder must identify themselves, whether directly involved or just a witness. Names and address are required to ensure accountability and to reconstruct what happened.

Additional key rules for ski slope safety

Helmet mandatory

From the 2025/26 winter season, helmets will be mandatory for all snow sports, regardless of age.

Liability Insurance required

A third-party liability insurance policy is required. It is not included in the ski pass and can be purchased even for just one day.

Alcohol and prohibited substances

Traffic rules apply on the slopes: maximum blood alcohol level 0.5 g/l and drugs are strictly prohibited.
