How to get there

Sas de Stria – once a mighty Austrian fortress at Valparola Pass in San Cassiano. Secret tunnels and night signals tell tales of war and bravery.

The climb up to Sas de Stria starting from Valparola pass – start is near the museum Forte Tre Sassi - is a relatively easy hike, though a very interesting one. Here you find a great combination of unique landscapes and historical evidences.

During the moderately easy ascent, you have the possibility to follow the traces of the First World War, including trenches and a tunnel - Sas de Stria was a strategic position for the Austro-Hungarian troops. The summit of the Sas de Stria is than a great panoramic point over the Dolomite mountains.

The ascent to Sas de Stria from the Valparola Pass – starting near the small Forte Tre Sassi museum – is a relatively easy hike, but definitely worthwhile, not least because of the unique views it offers.

During the ascent, you have the chance to encounter numerous traces of World War I, including trenches and a tunnel – Sas de Stria was a strategic position for the Austro-Hungarian troops. The summit of Sas de Stria also offers a spectacular panoramic balcony over the Dolomites.

To reach the summit (2477 m) (1h 30), you need to tackle a few short sections with metal and wooden ladders and pass through a few short tunnels. With some experience, fitness, and, above all, the right equipment, the hike is accessible even to children (accompanied by an adult).

The historical aspect of the route is particularly interesting. The trenches have been faithfully restored over the past few years.
