La Crusc/Heiligkreuz - Schneehöhle - Armentara
From La Crusc/S.Croce to the Snow Grotto and back to Badia
Overview: A marvellous walk at the foot of the imposing walls of Sas dla Crusc, which soar vertically skywards, passing though the woods so that you can admire the vast flowering meadows of the Armentara. A brief stop at the ‘Snow Grotto’ at the foot of the northwest wall of the Piza dles Diesc summit. This is a fascinating natural grotto, carved out of the snow formed from the water which, during the thaw and the summer storms, runs down from the Piza dles Diesc of Sas dla Crusc.
Starting point: Badia (1327 m) - chairlifts S.Croce and La Crusc
Itinerary: From Badia ascend with the chairlift to the
La Crusc/S. Croce Sanctuary (2043 m). The trip to the Snow Grotto and the return to Badia by way of the Armentara meadows starts from above the church, firstly eastwards in the direction of Sas dla Crusc, then, after 200 metres, take the trail nr. 15/B on the left, in the direction of Spëcia/La Val. The path is on the flat, and passes through a wood of arolla and mugo mountain pines. Enjoy the breathtaking view over the Armentara meadows, set against the background of the Puez-Odle group, the Pütia mountain and, to the north, the chain of glaciers which border with Austria. After 25 minutes, you come to Plan Sotsas, a clearing where the Snow Grotto can be admired. Continue in the same direction until you come to a junction. Here, follow the forest road on the left, marked with the nr. 18. This initially winds its way through the wood, before opening out onto the Armentara meadows, famed for their wealth of flowers.At the junction with the trail marked nr. 15/A, follow it to the right, heading north, until you reach the edge of the wood where the descent begins. From here, continue on the left, and follow the sign for Badia
(Roda de Armentara). After a slight climb (5min.), you will reach the Ütia Ranch da Andrè hut (1h 30min.). Carry on in the same direction. The path, initially on the flat, dips down into the Valacia hollow where you can admire a small lake (biotope) teeming with life. You will walk along the chalets at Razuns before reaching the Valgiarëi farm. From here, keep following the signs for Badia on the left, skirting the Ćialaruns, Andrac, Alfarëi, Ruac and Fussè farm before coming to San Linert and the starting point.
