Excursions to the peaks of Lavarela and Conturines
Overview: Hiking in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park. The peaks of Lavarela and Conturines dominate the mountain setting of La Villa and San Cassiano. They offer a thrilling spectacle, particularly in the evening when the rocks shimmer red at dusk.
Starting point: San Cassiano/Capanna Alpina (1726 m)
Itinerary: The hike starts at the Capanna Alpina (1729 m) and follows trail nr. 11, on the flat to begin with, then climbing up to Col de Loćia (2069 m). Next, it crosses vast areas of alpine pines before reaching the Gran Plan, or Plan de Ciaulunch, a large green plateau. A short climb from the plateau’s edge leads to the Tadega pass. Now keep left as you enter the valley, which is at altitude, using an easily recognisable trail, then climb upwards, and after crossing a steep crag, you can walk by the side of Lêch de Conturines (2518 m). Another crag leads to Büsc da Stlü. Passing between rocky steps, you finally reach the edge (2885 m). Take a close look at the entrancing town of San Cassiano. After the pass, zig zag across a steep gravel-covered slope and then go right over a manageable ledge. On the left, over smooth rocks, you come to the real climb to the top. Through a gully, you reach on the right the highest point of Lavarela (3055 m). The imposing view shows almost all the Dolomites. If you want to enjoy the breathtaking view over Alta Badia, then you should scale the western peak, marked with a cross (3034 m).
The descent follows the same route as the ascent.
To climb to the top of the Conturines, follow a well marked track which, from the pass of the ridge above Büsc da Stlü, leads off to the left. Once you have passed a scree-covered incline, you can climb up to the rocky slopes. Steel cables will help you reach the manageable edge of the summit.
