The mountainous belt between the rivers Adige and Piave and between the Val Pusteria and the area of Belluno, south of the Alps, is dominated by the mighty peaks of the Dolomites. One of the most suggestive points of the Dolomites is the Sella massif (Grup de Sela in Ladin language) from where the four Ladin valleys branch off: Val Badia on the northern side, Val Gardena, Val di Fassa and the Livinallongo Fodom valley.
The southern side of Val Badia, Alta Badia, is ensconced in a wide sunny hollow in the heart of the Dolomites, framed by meadows and woods and overlooked by the rocky giants of the Grup de Sela and Cier, Sassongher and Gherdenacia, the Sasso Santa Croce (Sas dla Crusc in Ladin language) and the Conturines, with the Puez Odle and Fanes Senes Braies natural parks forming a boundary.
The 6 towns of Alta Badia grouped together in 3 municipalities – Corvara with the towns of Corvara and Colfosco, Badia with the towns of La Villa, San Cassiano and Badia and La Val – have about 6,000 inhabitants.
