Mount Lagazuoi and the sites of the First World War in the Dolomites

Mount Lagazuoi was a theatre of operations during the 1st World War when the Italian Alpine troops were lined up against the Austrians.

The Italian positions on the ledges underneath the peak of the mountain were in effect for two years a key point of the first order on the Dolomite front. The same ledges took the name of the sector commander, the then Captain Martini.

The Conturines cave bear, the Ursus Ladinicus

In 1987 a cave full of fossils was found in the zone of Conturines, at an altitude of 2800 m. The fossils were the skull, bones and teeth belonging to a bear

The excursion:

Starting from San Cassiano / Capanna Alpine we climb on the trail no 11 until Col de Locia where we take the steep trail on the left which goes up the boulder till the foot of the Conturines mountain. The journey of approx. 7 hours is challenging and the excursion is therefore recommended for experts only.
The cave where the fossil remains of the bear where found, can be visited only with a guide.

Sotciastel and the Bronze Age settlements

The onset of research was due to the interest of Dr Lois Craffonara, director of the Ladin Institute of San Martino from 1977 until 1992. The proposal was taken up in 1988 by the Government Department of Archaeological Treasures. The choice to begin the research on the hill at Sotciastel/Badia in Alta Badia was made because the site appeared to be the most promising one among the archaeological areas in the surroundings.
